Water Garden 1   Drilled Rock Fountain
This is a lovely example for an informal natural looking pond that would fit perfectly in a typical cottage garden. The fountain adds interest as well as vital oxygen to the pond. The large number of surface covering plants in this pond will keep algae growth at bay. The hedge in the background provides partial shading which helps to keep the water temperature down during the summer month.   A drilled rock fits on every patio and in even the smallest front garden. All you need is a rock which you can get predrilled from most good garden centres and a small water reservoir in the ground with a small pump to operate the fountain. A grid over the water reservoir covered with some attractive pebbles finishes the perfect contemporary water feature.

Illuminated Fountain
  Water Lillies
Illuminate your fountain and your garden plants for fascinating effects at night.   Water Lillies are great surface covering plants. They protect the pond from too much sunlight and use up surplus nutrients before the algae do. Apart from that a heavily planted pond like this, just looks stunning when the flowers are in bloom.

Children and Ponds   Don't be afraid of having a garden pond if you have children. Children love watching and playing with water. Just follow a few basic rules of a safe pond design and always supervise your children in the garden. To make a pond safe keep the depth very shallow. The pond in the picture is about 5 inches deep and has a hole in the centre for a fountain and a filter pump. This hole is around 2 foot deep but it is covered with a sturdy grid so that the child cannot fall into it. The edges of the pond feature very gentle and non-slippery slopes. Remember: Never leave your child alone near the pond. Even a water depth of just 1 inch can be dangerous for a very young child.
